How do Afford Your Rock and Roll Life Style?

The craft I feature today is an old craft to be handed down to my son someday. My hand painted leather Jacket from days of yore ( and just barely according to Michelle and Blaise) worn to Gulf War I protests and many, many concerts/shows. Painting peoples leather jackets was one of my first "craft for money" ventures. I have saved my jacket for Jake because I want to share with him how great it can be to participate in happy subculture and inhabit a time and a place as completely as you are able.

I was tooo sleepy to post on Friday because on Thursday night we went to go see Jacob's first concert. We got tickets for our birthdays to see the Decemberists from my lovely younger sister and her husband. The show was at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, so we drove up right after school. We parked and took the BART over. We wanted to have dinner but by the time we had reached the other side of the bay it was getting late. We went and scarffed up big greasy slices of pizza on Powell Street, just like I used to do before shows when I lived in San Francisco. Sitting outside and watching the parade of tourists, hipsters and homeless drift by.

We went to the theatre and checked out the outfits of the crowd in the lobby. I worked at the Warfield sometimes when I lived in San Francisco and my hubby did too. It was a great way to see most of a show, for free. I worked for shows I was curious about but not my favorites.. For Instance.. Alice Cooper was a usherable show. For Nirvana, I ponied up and was out in the mix crushed against the stage, slowly going deaf and screaming. Joy.

Jacob, all freshly 11, is a bit short for the floor, (not that the Decemberists had a mosh pit or anything) so we had some lovely seats in the front of the balcony. He dressed for the occasion in a T shirt, tie, army jacket, bowler hat, and black and white wing tips. Jake usually hits the hay at 8:30 pm and the opening band didn't start until 8:00. I was worried that he would poop out on us. He watched intently even though we did not know the opening band. Lavender Diamond.. a quirky band with a whimsical lady singer. He was curiously watching while they set up for the next act. The Decemberists play a rather astounding selection of instruments in their show. After a bit he did ask " why is it taking so long? when will the Decemberists come on?" Oh, do I ever remember thinking the same!
The lights dimmed, the crowd went wild and The Decemberists took the stage. They are a very unusual band. " British Folk Inspired Library Pop".. singing often of historical or fabled murders and ghosts, tragedies of all makes and models with upbeat irony and musical influence that is at once recognizable and still defies classification. Jacob sat up and found all the faces from their only self produced video. His eyes sparkling as we clapped and cheered. He sang along and followed the bands commands of audience participation .. including a vocal warmup so we wouldn't strain our voices. His dad snuck out and got him a concert t-shirt with the art work of Carson Ellis.. (someone who has influenced my craft in many subtle little ways..Her site is down.. so sad.)
We showed him how to tell if there will be an encore and he still glittered at 11:30 when the house lights came up.
Tired, quiet and different he rode home on the train. His concert 't' worn two day in a row since the show. Will he end up like me with a door trimmed with ticket stubs? I love to watch him relate to music.. He loves so many atrists from the Gorillaz to Beck to the Thermals and the Clash. Stacie knows.. We influence what our kids listen to and they make it their own. People who love music have a sound track to their lives.. People who make music are a gift to all of us.

It's a mad mad whirlwind world

Okay.. I am going to hop all over the place on this one so hold onto your hats..

I suspect I have undiagnosed ADD. Personally, I file it under the "blessing and a curse" catagory. I think it strongly contributes to my "ideas" superpower but I am scatterbrained and addleheaded when it comes to life's more mundane aspects.. And it is often difficult for the more methodical and directed amoungst us to keep up with my mental whirligig. This post will likely be very "symptomatic". Do indulge me.. I love to be indulged.

I never told ya'll how the Craft Lab taping went.. I think it went really well.. I only fouled up really badly, like, 3 times. ( She says, hopefully.)
I had fun and got to show off some crazy eggs. I used Goose Eggs for the big ones.

I did some other different eggs before but honed some new techniques just for them. The show will air in spring sometime.

The host is Jennifer Perkins, who was one of my earliest Crafterpreneurial heroes. She is the owner of the Naughty Secretary Club and a member of the Austin Craft Mafia.. When I first found their sites I sighed deeply and said.. "I want to hang out with these women." Well, we didn't go clubbing or anything.. But my picture is on Her Flickr Photos.. How cool am I feeling now? Pretty cool, I assure ya!

We also survived the Disneyland crowds and had a screaming good time.

That was our splurge because it was my birthday this week and Jacob's too!

I had a head cold on my birthday-day (I didn't stutter.. I needed to differentiate, as we actually celebrate Birthday Season around here) so we embibed with mimosas (for the vitamin c of course) and two kinds of soup. Butternut and Crab Bisque.. It was quite grand in a snuffly sort of way.

I got The Audrey Hepburn collection on DVD and this Cast Iron Deer Head for enhancement of our psycho cabin decor.
Yes.. it is wierd. But I adore it. And I had to have something that could stand up to what I got myself with my birthday monies last year:

Yes.. the lovely Model. My meaty muse. Perhaps not as practical as Alice's 10 year supply of lipgloss.. but i am a frivolous soul.
No pics of me, thank goodness.. too groddy.. ( how do you spell that?)

Jake opted for Cherry Pie.. and fettucini alfredo. He loves pasta so much, his nickname is Noodle. He is a self-proclaimed non-meat eater.. Only some seafoods. He met a chicken one day and came home to announce "We can't eat chickens anymore, mom.. they are really cool."

I believe he enjoyed his celebration.

Next subject: Craft Updates:
I am making T's again!! here's a WIP pic.. I think we will have "precocious, resilient, uppity, stalwart, reckless, emboldened, brazen and flippant" in this batch. These are for a couple of "craft and cocktail" holiday shopping parties I am going to do in Oakland next month.. If you will be in the area and you want to come by and say howdy send me an email ( my email link is in my blogger profile) or leave a comment and I will get you some more info.

I hope to have eight T's done after my trip up to Gualala to visit my mom, my Grandma and Great Aunts and Uncles this weekend. ( Yes I am now 38 and still lucky enough to be able to hug my grandma and her siblings too..!)

Next week I will get going on Some Joan Of Arc t's too..

Last weekend my sister came down and we were working on some Christmas ornaments inspired by Ulla's theatres.
They are super fun to make. I wish I could've taken that class, but I really need to sell some more craft before I can.. (wimper. sigh.)

I am still averaging 10 projects done per week but I want to bump it up to 15 to get ready for those parties.. We will have to see if I am capable.. that is a lot of completion for my bumblebee brain.

Finally: a shout out to Linda who i got to see again after we met at Ulla's soldered Jewelry Class this summer.Ulla... and all her students too.. Cool group for sure. If you get a chance take a class there... Do indulge yourself the opportunity. Delightful!

Zombie dolls: anatomical annie and butcher boy bob.. now with pictures

I did these dolls last month and have been saving them to post for
Craftster's "Zombies, Robots and Bears.. Oh My!" contest..

I got the doll parts last spring while thrifting for a whooping dollar for 2 sets. I also thrifted the wool felty and the stuffing.. I made the patterns for the bodies and stitched it on the sewing machine, Then I hand stitched the limbs in place. When I was done I had these tiny strange blank canvases. I didn't feel like making frilly little clothes for them. I wanted them to be a little wierd. Or wierd in a different way

The girl doll was easy.

I have a small collection of female anatomical models, like "The Invisible Woman" model and another teaching model that at 2.5 feet tall, is more formidable.
I have a rubber stamp that I use on tags sometimes, and a couple of spooky postcards. Annie has sisters waiting for her at my house.

The boy was harder, but with the flat white body, he looked ripe for dissection.

Yes. It's a little disturbing. But I find overly frilly dolls to be a bit disturbing in their own right.

With that said I almost fell off my chair when i saw the fearsome frills of this entry by Aiar :
Zombie Ballet Corp(se)

Oh did I mention I am extremely into Halloween?
But you probably picked up on that.
