New Vintage Wardrobe Project #9 : Reversible Wrap Skirt
For this project I used some of my great vintage fabric stash and made something different and yet the same as this Disco Era wrap skirt: Simplicity Pattern 7876.
This was a great project and fast too! Because it's reversible, there is no hand hemming. Just flip it inside out and attach the waist band.. deliciously easy.
I love the high waist and long lines of this skirt. I feel very tall when I am wearing it. It was inspired by an Audrey Hepburn skirt from a back stage photo shoot about the time Sabrina came out. I am so pleased I was able to get the right geometery by just adding 5 inches to the bottom. The weight of the doubled up fabric makes it feel more 50's than 70's as well. I need to get my crinoline situation handled. It would be exciting to see this over a light one!
Even my cat likes it.
I wrote a tutorial about how to draft this pattern from scratch ... And how to sew together this skirt. It will be posted in every step, with photos, as a feature fo rSew, Mama, Sew's skirt month. Hooray!! I will let you all know when it is up and running.
There is even a bit on how to adjust it for a more "modern" fit.. But why would you want to?

Wow, things changed in what, a blink of an eye? Is this a back up New Vintage Wardrobe or did you have a surge? Love that high waist. Excellent skirt - a girl's got to have quick change possibilities.
Amazing! It's a perfect skirt. And, in that last photo where you are petting the cat, you are so very Alice-in-Wonderland-adorable.
and it's deliciously cute too!
I had been planning on just winging a wrap skirt based on one I already have that's getting a worn and has always been a bit too long (the bane of my 5'1 existence.) Now I'm certain I'll do a reversible one instead for that awesome non-hemming part. You look great!
Love it! What a great skirt!
omg -- i have two of that pattern -- used it back in the 70's when i first bought it...
Okay. I can not think of anything you could put on your bod that wouldn't look amazing! You are Audrey herself. Only cuter, of course!!! That skirt looks dashing on you. You must make several, they are toooo fun!! xxo, V
Oh, and reversible! FAB!!
Even when you are smiling you are sort of goth. Maybe your goth name is Becky, like in that Sarah Vowell story.
OMG! I used to have that pattern. I must have made at least 5 skirts from it! What fun to see it again.
I read your blog yesterday, and I was coveting the pattern. Then today, I found the very pattern at a yard sale!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Do you have five hours a day for sewing? I'm amazed by how prolific you are. Wrap skirts always fall beneath the tie/bands on me. I had that very problem today actually... Yours looks like it will hold up so maybe it's just my body.
Great pictures as always!!
FABULOUS skirt!!
Beutiful skirt! And you make such a sweet model!!!
what a great skirt!! You did indeed capture a wonderful Audrey-ness! You have been So inspiring for me as i make my way through my sewing classes...i always think "WWBBD?" as i stitch along...What Would Bitter Betty Do! LOL! Keep 'em coming, lady! You are a muse!
that skirt is fantastic! can't wait for the tutorial.
You're funny!
Have you ever heard of a band called The Seekers - an Australian band from the 60's/70's. Their lead singer was Judith Durham - she had an amazing voice. You look a lot like her! Check it out for yourself:

I love that skirt. I wish I could look classy like that. I always put on an outfit and go to work thinking I look so good, then I catch a reflection of myself in a window or something and I realize I looke insane. Thanks for the wardrobe inspiration.
What a great skirt, and it looks so nice on you.
I'm just getting ready to make this very same skirt! Yesterday I bought the fabric--a delicate black cotton lawn embroidered with tiny, tiny black flowers. The idea of making it reversible is great...thanks for the tip. I may need to go back to the fabric store now.
you are too perfectly cute! I love this! what you created is so much more attractive than the cover art on the pattern sleeve.
Can I make a larger overlap than six inches? Would eight or ten work o.k.?
