What Happened to Wednesday: The Cone

I know... a double post! Which I usually wouldn't do, but I am in the middle of a pet crisis, so naturally I am taking pictures and well, I feel really bad for the dog. (Oh, the suffering baby, he suffers! from allergies... And from a paw that allergies made him lick until it got really nasty.)

But the pictures came out great so I have to share.

the offending foot

I'm Sorry, Cooper. The Cone Of Shame just looks good on you. Because you're handsome.

And Pathetic.

And I had to get up 5 times last night to check on you, because you can't wear it and lie down, and I had to make sure you hadn't chewed off the bandage,
so I'm exploiting you.

But you'll get a cookie in a minute. 'Cause I feel guilty about it.

Poor, sad, baby.

Hellllooo poor, sad, bebe. Speedy recovery and conelessness. Allergy in his foot? Can you say more, I hadn't heard of anything like that and my cat's been on steroids long term from chewing herself. I'd appreciate knowing what you've found out.

Well, it could be food or airborne allergies which make dogs itchy on their feet faces and at the base of their tail.

Our next step is to wait until winter when the air clears up some and then do elimination testing for food. If he still suffers, then blood testing for airborne with allergy shots, like a human. ( The delicate flower.) Luckily our vet keeps the costs low and teaches you how to administer the shots yourself.

But I keep hoping it is just some bad kibble.

What a tragic expression! He looks like he is wearing "guyliner"

Thank you so much! That's great you have a trustworthy vet. Best of luck for your trusty companion

I had to babysit my brother's giant pitbull after he got fixed not long ago, and he had a cone... it was terrible. Half the time he was just laying on the floor whimpering and the other half he was trying to smash it off by running into things. He succeeded. I had to tape it back together with duct tape.

What a face! Poor thing. My little dog was doing the same thing. Her allergies were so bad that she constanly had bacterial and yeast infections on her skin, here fur was falling out (huge bald spots) and she was constantly licking. Needless to say she didn't smell all that great either. I finally took her to a pet allergist. Best thing I ever did. She is currently on a home based diet and she gets allergy shots every 20 days (we give them to her). She has never looked or been better since I began this lifestyle 3 years ago. Her regular vet and all the people that work there still remark on how good she looks. All her fur has grown back, the licking is VERY minimal when she does lick and she smells good! And no more skin infections! Good luck.

We had a dog who used to lick and then gnaw a foot. I added brewer's yeast to his dog dish and he stopped. I ran out of the yeast and he gnawed again. I started back on the yeast and he stopped gnawing. The lady at the vet's called it a "coincidence" and passed me off as loony.

You might try it.

Gives me some good direction to try. Best to everyone and their furry companions.

I know it is not funny, but the first shot of this post, I thought you had found a mounted dog's head at the thrift...

sorry for your puppy!

Oh Gwen, It wouldn't be funny if I actually found a mounted dog head, but pathetic pup in a cone - mistaken for a mounted dog head IS funny.

Very Funny. And I have been laughing too MiniVanLife... But Behind my hands to protect his alleged dignity.

Poor cooper, he's rocking the cone of shame but doesn't look too happy about it.

I hope his foot heals quickly and he can find something new to wear. (Um, HELLO, you couldn't paint that thing camo or something? hee!)

Oooooh, dare I admit that at first I giggled when I saw the poor pooch with that cone?
Your photos make it look like an avant-garde fashion accessory.

You know, Benadryl can work wonders for dogs with allergies when they are having an episode.
I like it better then cortizone..
Ask your doctor about trying it.

When I saw the first photo, it looked like a dog's head rising out of a mist or something. I had no idea what I was looking at till I scrolled further down. Poor Cooper! He looks positively miserable. Hope he gets better very quickly.

our dog used to do this -- licked what the vet called "hot spots" until they were like raw ground meat. Ugh. He learned how to use the cone to scratch the paws, though, so he had to get longer and longer converted plastic trashcans. It was pitiful and (I'm ashamed to say) funny and dear. He eventually got to the point where he would run into the backs of our knees with the can if he felt we were not paying sufficient attention to him. He was a really fantastic, really funny 90-lb. dog who picked ripe black raspberries with his lips and gave us free rides by pulling us with his leash on our sleds. I miss him! I hope your sweet pup can lay off the licking. Also, ask the vet about a straighter-sided solution for nighttime sleeping. Like a kitchen trashcan with the bottom cut out.

Poor thing! My dog licked his paws too and had frequent ear infections. After much research, we eliminated all corn from his diet (a product found in many dog foods) He hasn't had an ear problem in over a year and no more paw licking. It's worth a try, if you haven't already!
