Sugar Skull Party

Last weekend I had a lovely afternoon decorating Mexican Sugar Skulls with some crafty ladies.
Sugar Skull are treats that are offered to the returning spirits on Dia De Los Muertos, which is November 1st.
The week leading up to The Day of The Dead is celebrated  by creating alters in the home with photos of the departed, and special food. Candy and toys are offed to the spirits of lost children and adult spirits even get mescal and cigarettes.

We celebrated with champagne and chocolate fondue for the living.

The sugar skulls were easy to make with a mold I got as a gift from  this site. They have many more molds and I may need to add to my collection. Because easily I can see this becoming an Annual Tradition.

Blogger is breaking my heart and not letting me upload all my pictures today... So Go to my Flickr to see more!

I had never heard of this custom. They are spookily charming. What fun. Thanks for telling us about it.

I love Dia de los Muertos! When I was a teacher, at a Spanish Immersion school, it was a huge event for us. Such a wonderful holiday of rememberance. (I've been planning a post about it on my blog, too!) Nice skulls!

Those turned out so great! I've only ever decorated pre-made ones, was it hard to make the skull itself?

You can call me Betty, or Bethany, or Beth ...Just don't call me late for dinner. said...

hey Julie!
they were super easy to make. Just sugar, water and meringue powder. (I got mine at the party store in the cake decorating section.)
Mix it up, mold it, and let it harden over night.

cinchy!

fun! btw -- dia de los muertos is november 1 AND 2 (traditionally deceased children are remembered on nov 1 and adults on nov 2).

i'm sure my uncle went to the cemetary and washed my father's grave. someday i'll get there again to do it myself (last time was in 2003).
