HAndMade Holidays can Be Easter Too.. ( or Passover, if that's yer deal)
Hey.. I'm taking a break from relentless hawking of my ever growing pile of wares to say that I think this Season Of Secular and Religious Spring Holidays should be as Handmade as The Winter Holidays were. I will be featuring some cool "how-to's" on filling the baskets, making a matzo cover and if I'm on my game, maybe a Seder plate too. Plus some lovely spring fashions along these very lines... Pretty much all the time from now 'til spring break.
Easter can be such a gluttonous trash pile of plastic crapulence... But it simply doesn't need to be.. Because really Easter is all about the candy. Isn't it? All the cheap plastic toys, the "never play with it again" basket fillers that line landfills and the bottoms of the overflowing toy boxes of the nation's youth, are a secondary part of the celebration. ( Domestic Anarchy's Post to this very Point.) Of course, there is the whole Jesus thing too, if that is your guy. For believers, that's the whole ticket to heaven... and that IS something. Rebirth too, for sure, for those of the more agnostic leaning... but really, without the chocolate? It just isn't the same.
One year, my mom.. who is really great and I love her a lot... but one year, she made our Easter baskets "healthy". There was a flocked Bunny piggy bank, and an orange, and an apple, and some raisins, and fruit leather. I am still scarred. If you want healthy Easter: Just Don't Put In As Much Candy.. but there needs to be at least one good sugar rush in the basket.
I feel strongly on this point. I appreciate your attention.

I'll always pray at the alter of chocolate. :)
OH YES BB... it's gotta be chocolate and it's gotta be See's... I prefer the gigantic Chocolate/Walnut egg that takes at least two days to eat! Lindy
Yep, gotta have the candy. And I agree, if it's See's - then that's even better. I am quite excited about a new box they have this year that features the great artwork from the in-store placards and posters. It is precious!
Oh sure, it comes in other forms, but there is NO substitute for the chocolate bunny. Chocolate santas don't even come close (duh -- no ears!).
Hip Hip Hooray for chocolate!
I don't think they had fruit leather when I was kid, you young thing.
I hid soap and tea bags one year, in addition to the candy. What a freak I am!
Wish kids liked hard boiled eggs, otherwise it seems like such a waste.
newer reader here. loving "gluttonous trash pile of plastic crapulence"!! so funny, so true.
and thanks for the link to the other blog. liked that entry too, and the idea of colorful art supplies for the baskets with candy.
crapulence. That totally sums up Easter Baskets!! That is almost as good a word as my husband's fave - craptacular.
Oh and you have totally inspired my next Handmade Parade Challenge!
most assuredly you need sweets in the basket. luckily my mom never tried to be healthy with us!! the first year my hubby and i were dating he made up a lovely basket of pretty girly stuff. and i still said, "weres the chocolate???"mmmm maybe thats why i never got another??
Um, see, your mom has nothing on my dad. Hee. We never got Easter baskets as Easter was a "Religious Holiday" and had nothing to do with candy. Heh. JOY JOY.
To my dad's credit though, he made up for it on Valentine's day. :D
Ewwwwwww, no healthy Easter!!!
My neighbor was selling some See's (on behalf of her girls' church group) and assured me I didn't need to buy much, as if I were doing something odd! Ha! The husband will be lucky to even see any of it!
i couldn't agree with you more! love this post!
Good for you for being the lone "Handmade Holiday applies to Easter, too" voice in the crowd! And NO holiday... NONE... should be healthy in regard to food. Isn't there something in the Bible about rising on the third day due to the amount of caffeine in the chocolate Jesus had consumed a few days prior?
Oh, come on. I can't believe I didn't put in ANY chocolate! But then again...maybe I figured the grandparents would take care of that part. Sorry, dear. I'm glad you still love me.
Mom
The only thing I love about this time of the year is that Cadbury Creme eggs become available in stores. I can live on those. I love them so much.
Your mom had the right idea, fruit is nature's candy. :)
awww, hehe
susan
It's better with chocolate.
Rock on with your handmade self!
Alas no time for the handmade here with the two big events I have to pull off in the next two weeks and since I need to buy the kids their Spring/Summer pool stuff anyway.. I feel almost giddy with the power :) Of course I made the mistake of getting the candy tooooo sooooooon and now will have to buy more.. shame on me!
Maddie, Who had a much better reply before this but blogger killed it! waaaaah!

Healthy Easter baskets? That's hilarious! I'm surprised MY mum never thought of that.
I WANT CANDY!
fun blog! found you via amy t sharp.
I feel like a glutton for staring at this photo of dressed chocolate...I've been undressing those sheep for a while...
I am pretty sure Jack would freak out this year if there was no candy. He is completely convinced that the bunny is going to share a lot of candy with him. LOL
