You Turn Your Back for a Few Seconds

The famous pompom mice and tiny hand stitched felt veggies

Well, far be it from me to claim to be a devoted blogger as of late. I had some super good New Year's type intentions but Life Intervened. It's all on the super major, but "kind of personal, not really blog appropriate" side with the decided exception of the beginning of my Fabulous New Career in Agriculture.

I am working with some of my favorite people at one of the best places I know: Mariquita Farm. I will be helping with the administration for the "direct to consumer" portion of the farm business. This is the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture- also known as the farm box) and also the really exciting bulk buying Ladybug/ Mystery Box services. Long story short- I will be working to get the best organic veggies into to the hands of talented home chefs and foodies... And I love that! What could be better?
Local, good for you and yummy! If you are a local bay area friend, go and sign up. (You can thank me later!)

I still expect to be crafting it up again soon, and once I get my ducks in a row, I am looking forward to hanging out here more often!

Holiday Strategies for Slackers: The Soup Strategy

For the Next Several Weeks I'm going to make a giant pot of Soup on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
(click on any soup or cookie name and get right to my favorite recipe...)
This week it's Pumpkin Curry...
Next Week, Potato, Kale and Chorizo...
Then White Bean Chili .... ( but use left over Turkey)
Creamy Tomato
etc etc etc.

Make enough to eat twice and freeze one more lunch or dinners worth.
That gives you one night free from Kitchen-y chaos...
You could make a gift...

Or make a batch of cookie dough ahead and freeze it.
Imagine dough, and then a clean kitchen before you start baking.
Just make and ball form the cookie dough, pop into a ziplock bag,
write the baking time and temp on masking tape and tape it to the bag.

Fresh baked, warm, low mess, holiday cookies as you want them.
You do need to pull out the dough and let it thaw a bit...
Roll them in their sugary outer jackets and viola!

Works great with:
Peanut Butter
Molasses Crinkles
Chocolate Crinkles

Sweet Sugar 'Shroomies: The Tutorial

Here is a sweet little craft that was the brainstrom of Michelle at Green Kitchen and myself while we were getting ready to mold sugar skulls.
We were recalling the peekaboo Easter eggs made of sugar
were made of the same stuff and Michelle had an old candle form
and said: "I want to make peekaboo sugar mushrooms".

Well, I went home and decided I could put them together using regular dishes as molds.
And here is the tutorial so you can too!

Sugar 'Shroomies:

supplies:
white sugar
meringue powder
spray on color
powdered sugar
food color
(all non grocery items can be found where they sell cake decorating supplies)

Tools:
fork
various cups bowls and glasses
spoon
plate or stiff card board to invert and use as a base
icing bag or plastic bag with a small hole in one corner

No one step of this is very time consuming but the drying times are not to be trifled with.
Allow yourself enough time and plan ahead, setting timers and whatnot to ensure maximum success.
Even in those circumstances keep a sense of humor,
because the failure rate was about 50/50, for me, with the stems.

step1: mix up sugar, meringue and water in a 1 cup sugar to 1 tsp each of meringue powder and water.
mash around with a fork until it resembles damp sand.

Step 2: Press into molds. Compacting as tightly as possible with palm of your hand.
I used a votive holder, a coffee cup and a half cup jam jar and a shot glass for stem molds.
I use a shallow bowl, a teacup, and small champagne glasses for the tops.

Step 3 : Cover mold with plate or heavy card board then invert.

step 4: Carefully remove mold and let dry for 2- 2 1/2 hours for stems.
Caps are done and should now be left somewhere safe to cure for 12 hours or so.

Step 5 Recover the semi dry sugar stem form with it's original mold and flip back over. Larger stems are the only ones with room to be hollowed out effectively.

Step 6: Hollow out larger stem pieces. Leave a half inch wall of sugar. Let dry for another half an hour then remove par of the wall for a peekaboo door. Leave in the cup to dry overnight.

Step 7:Match up your stems and caps.

Step 8: Mix up Royal Icing. ( Recipe here.)

step 9:  Color you Mushroom caps. Used spray food coloring for red and cocoa powder brushed on with a pastry brush for brown.
Now use icing to glue a small picture on the inside if you like. Use icing to glue cap to stem and stem to a base made of cardboard. Colored icing makes cute grass and flowers when piped from a pastry bag or plastic bag with a small hole in one corner. Pipe spots on a red cap.

Have Fun!!! Send pictures!!!

Made It Myself Monday: Canning Labels for YOU!

I have to admit... I looked around for something cheap and cheerful but, I didn't find canning labels that I loved. So I made my son teach me some Photoshop. And I designed these "not quite perfect but way better than any other freebies I was able to locate" jar lid labels. And now I want
to make them available to you!

labels for lids

DOWNLOAD JAM LABEL FILE

Edit: I did it! I made the labels into downloadable PDFs! Now these are sized for the wide mouth jar lids. If you scale them down by about 25% they are good for the smaller jar lids. I may find time to create those too... But with a flu-ish kid and all... maybe not.

If you need these labels:
  • Just click on the tabs under the picture!
  • Open file after it downloads
  • print onto full sheet adhesive labels... ( I got mine from one of those Giant Office Supply Stores)
  • Cut Out,
  • Peel Off and
  • Label Away.

Damn, your Jam is cute.

Betty
