Personal Public Service Announcement: Holiday Action Plan

unrelated crepe paper amaryllis photo:
available at the Iron Dog- just sayin'.

It's hard not to get caught up in all the "shoulds" that will be marching toward us in the next 6 weeks or so.
I'd like to take this post to remind myself, and all of you,
to do what you can to feed your soul,
not bite off more than you can chew (unless it's gingerbread),
let go of what needs to go,
and get right on down there in the moment as often as humanly possible.
Let's enjoy ourselves and each other.

Obligation Schmobligation. Pffft.
Let's Play.

Less Than a Bonnet... More than a Bow: A How To for You

Well, I know you are all waiting to see what kind of
Easter Headgear
will be the fashion must have of the season.

And it going to be THIS:

for the blog

 Yes.
The Felt Daffodil -Low to No Sew - Spring HeadBand Deluxe

For this tutorial you will need:

Supplies:
Felt in daffodil colors
  fabric glue
cheap plastic headband

Tools:
Scissors and pinking shears
sewing machine (optional.)

Start by cutting out the petals and leaf.
Also cut out a stem piece that is not from the pattern
but rather is long enough and wide enough
to wrap your headband.

Now to make the no sew variety... ignore the pattern and cut centers that look like this:

Glue the straight edges together  and you get this:

Pinch the petal piece together and put a few dabs of the fabric glue
in the center at the folds. My pinched petals look like this:

Add center to the front with another dab of glue:

Now glue and wrap the headband:

Seam up the center of the leaf if you are so inclined:

Glue the leaf across top of the head band:

Glue the two blossoms slightly off on one side of the headband:

Now Go On... Get Your Spring On..

And speaking of getting one's Spring On:
Two Great A-Longs That would be great together:

Holiday Strategies for Slackers: The Soup Strategy

For the Next Several Weeks I'm going to make a giant pot of Soup on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
(click on any soup or cookie name and get right to my favorite recipe...)
This week it's Pumpkin Curry...
Next Week, Potato, Kale and Chorizo...
Then White Bean Chili .... ( but use left over Turkey)
Creamy Tomato
etc etc etc.

Make enough to eat twice and freeze one more lunch or dinners worth.
That gives you one night free from Kitchen-y chaos...
You could make a gift...

Or make a batch of cookie dough ahead and freeze it.
Imagine dough, and then a clean kitchen before you start baking.
Just make and ball form the cookie dough, pop into a ziplock bag,
write the baking time and temp on masking tape and tape it to the bag.

Fresh baked, warm, low mess, holiday cookies as you want them.
You do need to pull out the dough and let it thaw a bit...
Roll them in their sugary outer jackets and viola!

Works great with:
Peanut Butter
Molasses Crinkles
Chocolate Crinkles

Eat Well, and Slack On!

WIP Wednesday: The Hat in Question

As I'm teaching myself how to use Photoshop, I have hits and misses with my concepts.
Sometimes the actresses and Burlesque stars have something clear to say
and sometimes they are just esoterically whimsical.
This young lady was the latter of the two.
But whether they come together easily or not I have so much fun doing this that I forget myself entirely and will tweak and nudge the pieces for hours, if not interrupted.

I'm reading a great book on creativity by Ken Robinson, called
The Element.
So far ( I'm a third of the way in) it's about finding something that combines your talent and interest, so that you can find that unique endeavor that makes time cease to exist. It is then that you are in
"your element".
What puts you in your element?

Thanks To My Valentines!

This is a mildly bureaucratic post about my sweet new Valentines' and my desire to share the joy.
I'm all set and have sent out emails to all my crew ( If you haven't heard from me, leave a comment and I will try and figure out what happened.)

I created this little button so even if you aren't on my list you can gather up a fun little list of your own and so we can all have pictures to inspire and encourage our little midwinter love fest.

If you want to post the button to your blog, let me know and I will send you the code.

Fashion Friday: Buy Me Indy Gifts...

Personal Advent: Day 6

click on the pictures to go right to these shops.

Okay, it is more blessed to give than receive...Especially if you are receiving mass produced goods from China because your loving family isn't as crafty as you are (Not talking about anyone in my family...of course.).

So, sometimes taking a few minutes to decide what you'd like to get can be practically altruistic. I mean, it will save the loved ones stress, better for our fabulous craft community, and 90% of the time these come with Far Less Packaging. So Go On.. Update your Etsy Favorites, email them to "Those Who Need Hints". They will be grateful and in one more small way,

You'll be a better person.

Welcome, November

Well, here we are.
November.

There is so much to do. I still need to scrub the zombie blood off the bathroom floor. There are 3 weeks until Thanksgiving, 8 until Christmas, and our family celebrates Hanukkah in there too.
But wait!
I want these weeks to be filled with fun and warmth and creativity.
I want to make sure I spend great time with my friends and family, and I want to be present, in the moment, not just rushing through the motions of togetherness. My intention of finishing all the handmade gifts by now has NOT materialized, but I do have several started and a few really close to finished. Handmade Holidays and supporting local and independent merchants is still a top priority for me.  As is creative reuse, and all that jazz.

It occurs to me, That This Will Take Some Planning. So, today I start my Personal Holiday Advent.

Today is Day 1.
List and Calendar Day.
Itemize, Prioritize,  and Realize:
It's time to pick the best, and chuck the rest.

Inhale. Exhale.
Go forward in that right frame of mind.

Tutorial Tuesday: The Right Fabric for Your Pattern

Oh, do please click pics for legibility and possible print out.

Well, This is a quick cribbed checklist from The Complete Book Of Sewing by Constance Talbot, Published in 1943. The name says it all... this volume is a great reference resource.

You have to admire her correct, yet stilted, grammar.

I'm cutting out a casual fall jacket from a light weight woolen myself. And a cape from a coat weight boucle, a gypsy skirt from a striped rayon and a huge hole in my housekeeping standards.

( Oh, Balanced Life where are you?)

Made it Myself Monday: I am Lying To Myself

His name is Sylvester, after the donkey in 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble'.
One of those "be careful what you wish for" fables.

This is a one of a kind. It is the only holiday gift I have finished so far.... and I make a lot... and I had a goal of being done by my birthday in October. Early October.

Go On.. Get Your mule on.
Japanese Craft Book "Animal Mascots"
ibsn:978-4-391-62420-5

So that means I need to finish about 2 gifts a week, and never fail, from now until my birthday, all other distractions not withstanding...
I will try, but, that goal might be a leeeettle bit too lofty.

Just a leeeeettle.

Hey there Santa! You're getting snow in my swimsuit! I mean I know why I want to get started but I feel kinda Obsessive putting any real pressure on myself here at the beginning of summer vacation. I guess I'll just start with the toys. They always feel like playing anyways.

All Yours (But feeling more Selfish than Elfish),

Tutorial Tuesday: Vintage Suitcase into Mobile Studio

Once only a lonely lost piece of luggage
Now this cutie is full of gift tag and correspondence goodies...

I like a good vintage suitcase, but after you aquire 40 or 50 of these little darlings it might begin to occur to you that you can and quite frankly MUST give them a second incarnation of true utility, or buy them their own house or something.
While thrifting in my old hometown got a sweet little green case and I was reminded of of something I saw on Koreana's Flickr that she had scanned from a Cottage Living (I think) article.

So I gutted the little darling.
It was yucky, wear gloves.

cute on the outside...groddy on the inside. But for 2.00, who cares?

And now my step by step Tutorial on the vintage case upgrade.

You will need
a stripped out vintage suitcase
paper bag or large paper to trace a pattern. sturdy is better
fancy paper or fabric- amount varies by case size I used 2 large sheets of paper
foam core enough to make an insert for case lid and bottom
a large piece of poster board- enought to wrap around the sides of the case top and bottom
I used bias tape for an accent trim
flat elastic for tool loops

glues:
spray adhesive
hot glue

craft knife and scissors

1)Use a paper bag to make a template of the lid and bottom of the suitcase.
2) Use the template to cut the shape from foam core board or corrugated cardboard.

3) Lay out the tools the way you'd like them to hang in the case. Mark the back of the board where you will add elastic loops. (In the final design, the large pinking shears were too heavy for this lid insert.)

4) Cut the paper extra large round the board

and clip notches in the overhang, so it will lay properly as it's folded over.

5) Mount with spray adhesive. Fold over edges and let dry

6) Cut strips of the poster board to fit into the edges of the bottom and the edges the lid of the case. Cut paper to cover; enought to fold over the top and have 2-3 inched of notching clips on the bottom. ( Similar to lid insert.) Glue to cardboard, I used the spray adhesive.

7) Fit sides to inside of case.

You might need to slice 3 or 4 really deep notches to go around rounded corners.

Hot glue into place. Notched ends can be secured with white glue or more hot glue,

8) Apply bias tape as an accent and to hide little goofs.

9)Now lay out the tools and add the elastic loops to hold them in place. I pierced the paper and board witha sharp clean standard screw driver, and fed the elastic through from the front to prevent paper fraying. Mine are secured with knots and hot glue on the back side.

10)Hot glue in lid and bottom panels

11)Fill and thrill to the joy of your super custom stylish craft case.

12) Decorate the outside of the case as you see fit. Mine got a floral racing stripe decoupaged to it. But a stencil could have been really cool too...

Wanna be penpals? I got the paper.

Smooches dolls,
Betty

Workbasket Wednesday: Damn Near a Decade of Craft

Not too long ago I happened upon a remarkable find at the Goodwill store near my house.
The Workbasket Magazine, not one or two, but a nearly complete collection of issues from 1952 to 1960.
Say it with me now: Bo-Nan-Za!

This magazine is a treasure trove of handi-crafted miracles of semi-modern housewiffery including recipes, gardening, canning tips and all make and model of needlework.
Not to mention the advertising, which is the absolute last word on the fact that we have indeed "Come a long way, baby". (Ummm, "Free Style Book For The Stout", anyone?) It is chock fill of kitschy advise and ideas for a crafty girl who is just trying to hustle up a crafty buck. Want to make a few pennies off your neighbors? Plant a tiny succulent in cleaned out marrow bones! I bet they sell like hotcakes. My! Now, that is crafty.

Relax honey... I said you looked "kitschy"

I will be putting these in my etsy shop in yummy batches, as I have enjoyed them, but need to find them good homes with people who might be able to do the tatting, knitting, and adorable crochet patterns that I alas, cannot. If you are interested in the whole lot please drop me an email and make me an offer.

However, I will be using my Wednesday blog space to share some tasty tidbits found in their slightly yellowed pages.
And Today, we will start with

The Friday Finish Line (Saturday Edition)

I am back to my "School Week System" of making a list of what I managed to get done Friday to Friday.
What did I get done this week?

I canned tomatoes with my friend Meridith.
This is just batch number one. 17 Jars. 8 for me, 9 for her.

It is beyond addictive to set in stores for the winter.
It appeals to me on a
"wild frontierswoman/ Survivor of the Great Depression"
kind of level.

I sent StressBunny II: The Return of StressBunny
off to his new home in The British Isles.

I got my haircut. Only 12 weeks overdue.

Took Puppers to school.
He isn't the best puppy in class, but he's close.

Talked to the track coach about some nasty foul mouthed little creatures
who have NO Idea What Sportmanship Looks Like.

I made a new "pup with stuff" for a sweet friend

Finished His Dark Materials trilogy.

Bought "pricey" vintage toy kitchen. Photo Essay to follow.

Ordered more tomatoes to can.

Finished a crayon tinted vintage embroidery bit.

And went to watch track meet number one featuring "the reluctant runner: Jacob Mann".
He was not last.

Put off regular housekeeping chores with a level of procrastination that is difficult to explain,
let alone justify.

It was a pretty good week.

Blame it on the Moon.

( note to self: I think that when you are making tiny robot needle cases..
perhaps you could have better spent your time,
I dunno, checking bloglines, cleaning the fridge or something...maybe.)

I have been crafting overtime. I have been head down, ignoring blogs that I know I want to read, in the zone, crafting. Partially, it is because of my new toy. But I also think that with my grumpy PMS downside, I get this great creative influx upside to this whole "monthly thing". Not going to create a new life?... Well, then we'll just make do with an entire farmyard of pom pon animals, robot needle cases, a new quilt, and a doll with an extensive array of accessories.

I have a couple of finished New Vintage pieces that I need to post but ever since my photographer was accused, by a peer, of being a "mama's boy" after a photography session, I am having a hard time getting into his schedule. I have a third item "In Progress" that is going to be great but stalled when I had zipper trouble. The smallest problem and I hit dead stop with some of these things. It needs to be revived though. I just need some self discipline.

I am going to be making some Sign Language Sampler Kits for my shop too. I am working on stitching my third and they are really fun to make. So far I have made Vote, Practice, and now I am working on Build.

Mrs. Home Maker will be back in Blogland in the next couple of days, because she really adored basking in all your kind comments. As do I, my dears, as do I..

Thanks!

Made It Myself Monday: The Portable Project Board

This is my latest time saving semi-craft. I got a piece of homosote noise dampening board at the huge mega hardware mecca and cut it up with a box knife to appropriate sized pieces. I wrapped it tightly with a couple of lovely pieces of stash fabric. I kept it neutral so that I could highlight my project on it.

I then pinned up the pattern envelope, sewing instructions sheet, all the findings, my tape measure, the smaller cut pattern/fabric pieces, my tailors chalk and seam ripper. I spend way too much time looking for these things as I fuddle my way through most clothing construction.

It is a great way to keep all the bits of the project at arms length and eye level. I had an idea for an improvement though; I am making an arrow "you are here pin" to pin on the instructions too... Because I accidentally read the wrong instructions for the other "view " of the blouse I was making and did an un-necessary facing. Argh.

Thank goodness the extra seam ripper is pinned to the board.

And just in case you were afraid it was all business here at Abode de la Betty:

Snail of Wee Wonderfuls.. for my All Handmade Holidays this year. All wool felt, Heather Bailey fabrics and shocking pink antennae hat. Hopefully a young lady I know will like her a lot.
I think, for now, her name will be Astrid.

And Up Came her Head and it was Tuesday Already.

Tuesday! (email me, Tuesday! .. Blogger is providing me zero info on you, mystery lady.)
You are the shoe winner! (Just to clarify: I bought them (the only pair, on sale) hoping my feet would suddenly be smaller and it sadly never happened.. And they were never ever worn.. But hurrah for a second chance!)

Kirsten Schueler will also get a present because she has the same birthday as my son..
She was the first to comment ... And I like that about her.

Well, I spent the weekend with a bit of a migraine on Saturday (indulged much? hmmm..) and the last crafty thing I did was make some "slightly bigger than change purses" from the photo tutorial on Practically Necessary by Kerry.

Not only is Kerry just a real fashionable member of the New Vintage Wardrobe crew.. in her bike riding apron ensembles.. She makes the cutest hats anywhere too. Another birthday treat for me? Stay tuned on that one for sure!

The pouches are a really great way for me to make something cool and practical with some of my Handprinted Fabric Swap fabric that I got from Micha over at Baking with Medusa. I am making cool pouches to hold a little bit of embroidery gear or a tiny felt animal that needs hand-stitching.( I like to have a porta-craft or two at the ready, as I am spending a great deal of time in the offices of expensive dental professionals these days. My darling son gets his braces on in 7 days...... duh da duh! Just 3 days before HIS birthday.. wah wah wah.)

But back to Micha. She has a new blog project that I just LOVE. Handmade Family. Check it out. I am tearing through the old photos to find something to send her. I must have a zillion things, back from mom and grandma's crafty days of yore.

And speaking of love.. Meet Milo.

We got him from the "pound" on Sunday. Critters aren't "presents" so I won't call him that.. but I have to say this wild little guy makes every morning a party... so hence, another celebratory event in our Birthday Season.
He flung himself at the bars of his little cage and begged us to please pick him. He was very convincing. And we are all head over heels with Captain Charisma.

OOH.. More give aways coming up:
A fantastic handblown glass cocktail ring by artist Karen Carston.. runs really big. size 8, I think.
Photos coming soon.
